Home-Start Stirling is a Company Limited by Guarantee - we are still a 'not for profit' charity - but being incorporated minimises the risk to voluntary Board members. Although we are part of the national organisation of Home-Start, each scheme is run independently, we have a signed agreement with Home-Start: the National Body, which ensures that we abide by their Standards and Methods of Practice and follow the Home-Start ethos and quality guidelines.

People who have an interest in what we do kindly give up their time to form our Management Board, advisors from Health, Education & Social Work also attend our Board meetings.

The minimum requirement in relation to time commitment would be to attend our Board meetings, which occur approximately every 6 weeks.   We have a number of functional sub groups which members may also wish to take part in – particularly if you have skills/knowledge in that particular field ie PR, Personnel, Finance etc..

The Management Board have overall responsibility for the management of the scheme, employment of staff and the general running of the scheme – although many of these tasks are of course delegated to staff.

Board members are elected at the Annual General Meeting.

For anyone interested in becoming a Board member, some previous committee experience would be good, but it is not essential as full induction and ongoing training will be available.  We would particularly welcome anyone with skills in IT, promotion & recruitment, media, fundraising/finance – but ultimately we need people who can dedicate a bit of free time.

Although Board members would never, under normal circumstances be privy to any information about individual families that we work with, they do from time to time, have contact with families and volunteers at social events such as Christmas parties and trips etc.  We therefore ask all of our Board members to undertake an enhanced disclosure (criminal records check).  Prior convictions would not necessarily stop someone from joining the Management Board, it would depend on the nature of the offence, however we must stress that some offences would automatically be a barrier to working with us.

Our Board meetings are very informal and hopefully you will get many benefits from becoming part of our organisation.

All out of pocket expenses incurred on behalf of Home-Start will be reimbursed.  That would of course, include your travel to and from board/training meetings.

You will never be out of pocket as a result of working with us.

Please contact us by phone, email or fax if you would like further information.
